On Monday, May 18, 2020, Shanti Mehta Chopra passed away at the age of 97 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City following a bad fall in her apartment. Mrs. Chopra was born on March 16, 1923 in Quetta, Baluchistan in what was then, India to Sitaldas and Ghanibai Mehta. In 1935, she lost most of her family to an earthquake where she was buried for three days before being rescued. She received her bachelor’s degree and advanced teacher training from Punjab University in Lahore. She worked as a high school English teacher and eventually became the principal of the President Estate School in New Delhi where she became close the Mountbatten family and Indra Gandhi. Mrs. Chopra retired as an English teacher from the Delhi Administration 1981. Mrs. Chopra and her husband immigrated to the United States in 1996 to be closer to their daughter. Shanti Chopra was known as a Renaissance woman, seeking knowledge within all aspects of life. Known to be very social, outgoing, witty, and kind-hearted, she was epitome of a loving, caring individual. She remained independent and lively even in the last years of her life, often organizing social events and regularly participating in card games and intellectual with friends and family. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Indra Chopra, her daughter, Anju, and her granddaughter, Pamela. May her compassionate soul rest in peace. Om Shanti Om
