I knew Makarand for about 25 years, and our families are friends. We met Makarand and his wife through mutual friends. We would meet occasionally over the years at significant events in our lives, when we invited friends over, or when Makarand invited us to his house. We also met at a mutual friend’s place, and when that happened, we would seek each other out and catch up on our lives, as we had much in common, and got along well.
Makarand was a friend who exemplified principles such as honesty, truthfulness, dedication to family, friends and work. He was a very sincere person and a person you could count on to be there for you in your time of need.
We are saddened by Makarand’s passing and offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife, son, and mother, and to the extended Sovani family. While Makarand has gone to a better place, we cherish the times we spent together, and he will live on in our hearts and our memories. Our memories of him become more vivid whenever we look at photographs of significant events in our lives and see him there.

I worked with Makarand very closely over the past two years. He was hired a few months after my start date. When Makarand joined the team, we quickly got along and after a few months we would have regular chats about life and our careers. I would consider Makarand a career mentor. He taught me many lessons over the time that we worked together that I have tried to implement into my life. One of those lessons was out of a movie Makarand was quite fond of called The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
"When you have to shoot, shoot; don't talk"
Makarand said this to me after I failed a certification exam, I was working on during the first year of working on our team. What Makarand was trying to get me to understand was actions speak louder than words. When you commit to doing something don't fall into the trap of speaking about doing it. Instead do the actions required to meet your goal. I have been using this lesson he taught me in my professional and personnel life ever since.
Whenever Makarand was in a meeting with our team or in individual meetings with me he would bring a joyful energy to the conversation that I know others appreciated as much as I did. He was a professional who cared and helped his coworkers. All though we were never able to meet in person I perceive Makarand as a friend and I appreciated all the knowledge he gave me.
My sincerest condolences to Makarand's family. He left a mark on everyone who worked with him. I am sorry for your loss.

I have worked very closely with Makarand since the day he was hired. Even though I never had the opportunity to meet him face to face, but through the numerous video calls and communications we had, it never felt like we were far apart.
Through his genuine positivity, exemplary professionalism, and unyielding ingenuity, he was able to leave a lasting impact in his workplace. He will be missed very much.
I remember during our Thursday stand-up meetings; he will always be the one to say good morning to everyone and hoping everyone happy Friday-eve with a warm smile. I remember that he always put in the extra effort to make sure that his work is done properly and had clear communication. I remember the numerous projects that we worked on together where he provided valuable insights and creative solutions.
I cannot begin to imagine the sorrow this must be for his family and friends, but I hope that you find solace in this time of grief knowing that he has left a lasting legacy for those around him.

I met Makarand in person a few times in the East Rutherford office for some of our on-site events. He was cheerful, friendly, and in his work he was a consummate professional. I know he made significant contributions to the Integration Services team, a critical part of NIRT, and in so doing helped protect the nation's economy and financial system, no small feat. I knew Makarand little over 30 years, we worked together in Dadar, those were magical days. He and I took many official trips together mainly at Calcutta, Cochin, and Calicut. I was one of the luckiest, who got to spend so much time with him early on. We grow old together and laugh at the silly mistakes we committed back then. Makarand and I became best buddies over several visits to Calicut/Calcutta and we learnt great deal about how a Newspaper operates. I learnt so many things from Makarand, we continue to excel in our own ways.
We then reunited back in the US as we both moved here. Our wives became best friends, and we were always there with Sovani family; every important milestone in our lives was celebrated with Sovani’s. Every time we go to NJ, we either stay or do a quick stop by visit at Sovani’s. Every time we met, we remembered our best time and memories from the nineties. I was always delighted to learn new endeavors that Makarand would take on. There was always something new I learnt from him.
I used to call him ‘MAK’ and he used to call me ‘XNIL’, these were our internal names when we used to program Folio together.
I wish there was Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot……. I am going to borrow Eric Clapton voice with “Tear in Heaven” (https://youtu.be/JxPj3GAYYZ0?feature=shared).
I am going to miss you MAK, I know you are waiting for me at the other end of Rainbow Bridge. You would say “kay XNIL, you came late”.

Makarand Kaka
The name evokes so many memories. New York airport where I first landed in August 2001. As a student traveling to the US for the first time to start a new chapter, knowing he was there just gave me a sense of calmness in my otherwise terrified soul. He was there to receive me then take me to his beautiful home in Basking Ridge. He made me feel comfortable while at the same time providing me his nuggets of wisdom and tidbits on the life in the US that would come in handy as I went ahead. From there, his help was continuous, always giving and trying to make life easy for the other person. Till this day whenever I use my microwave and sit on my couch, I can’t help remembering the first ones I ever had were from him.
Over the years, I kept in touch with him, at his two beautiful homes in Basking Ridge and over numerous phone calls, even visiting him at one of his offices in Newport. While a man of few words, they carried a certain gravitas which revealed the determination, focus and his core principles. Also, he spoke them with a certain sense of humor and style in his ever smiling way. I still remember the afternoon when he announced the arrival of Alankar ! The words were few but the happiness I could see on his beaming face was limitless.
Makarand Kaka, you left us a little too soon but your legacy, wisdom and principles will grace your family, friends and peers forever. I know you are in a better place and all I can say is every-time I catch that next flight to Jersey, I will be thinking of my Kaka who was always there !!

Makarand is my colleague, mentor, and friend. I had the pleasure of working with him in NYC at Goldman Sachs first as an intern in the summer of 2004 and then from 2005 - 2007.
On first impression, Makarand looks intimidating - he is big, tall, has a thick moustache and has a serious look in his eyes. As I get to know him though, Makarand is actually a very kind and selfless person. Makarand is very considerate of others and he prefers to shy away and let others take the spotlight. He is a humble man, deeply knowledgeable, and well loved & respected by all of us in the workplace.
I have been truly fortunate to have the chance to work alongside him all those years. He is the best mentor I have ever had, I remember fondly the times we had to work late and ordered dinner together with the team in the office, often sharing office humor (just ask him about Bob, who is in the cube next to him). I also remembered on those nights Makarand would call home to talk to his baby and Makarand would slowly keep calling his son's name: Alankar..., Alankar..., Alankar. I have never met Alankar but that name certainly stays in my memory from those moments. I trust that Alankar is all grown up now, please share this with him as well and let him be proud of how great a character his father is.
Makarand, I bid you a fond farewell. Thank you for all the memories - you have left a lasting impact on many of us, I will cherish the legacy you have left behind. Rest in peace my dear friend, know that the world is a better place for us because of you.

Makarand ji leaves a big void in Bhagvad Gita study group. His recitation of commentary of Slokas in calm serene voice was mesmerizing. His peaceful personality came thru his quiet but clear voice. I had few occasions to talk to him at the book stall during Swami Ji’s LTPs. Haven’t met many people with such a calmer demeanor.
May Sri Krishna guide his gentle soul thru the transmigration to his new abode! Om Shanti!
Prayers to grant strength to his family and dear ones to bear his loss.

Makarand was a noble person. For him, the journey from his graduation till his innings in US was never easy. But, he strived hard.In his last days also, he had a very positive frame of mind. He used to say, I will be alright soon and then I will meet everybody. He wanted to come to India and visit Shri Someshwar ( Sovani's kuldaivat).
